Does QuickBooks Time Have Geofencing? How It Works and Where It Stops (2026)

QuickBooks Time is Intuit's time tracking product. If you searched for TSheets geofencing, this is the same product under its current name. Everything in this post about how the feature works comes from two Intuit pages, both read on September 8, 2026: the help article Use geofencing in QuickBooks Time and the GPS tracking FAQ. Plan facts come from the QuickBooks Time pricing page, read the same day. Where those pages are silent, we say so and give you the question to ask.

What QuickBooks Time's geofencing does

Geofencing is an Elite feature. The pricing page lists two plans, Premium and Elite, each a monthly base plus a per-user rate, and Intuit's help article places geofencing on Elite. Elite is the higher-priced of the two, and a QuickBooks Online account is required for either.

Here is what the help article and the FAQ say the feature does, in Intuit's own words where the wording matters:

• Geofences attach to a job or customer. A geofence belongs to a job or a customer, and team members only get notifications for jobs they are assigned to.
• The trigger is a notification. "Notifications appear on a team member's phone when they enter or leave a geofence." The GPS FAQ describes the same thing as reminders to clock in when they arrive and to clock out when they leave.
• The worker decides what to do with it. "A team member can choose to clock in and out as normal and disregard the geofence notification."
• The radius runs from 100 to 1000 meters. "The default and minimum radius size is 100 meters and can go up to 1000 meters."
• GPS runs while clocked in. Per the FAQ, GPS points are gathered while the team member is clocked in and not on a break.
• Location can be required per employee. The FAQ describes a per-employee setting called "require location to track time".

Put together, the feature is a prompt tied to a place. A worker assigned to a job arrives inside the fence, the phone reminds them to clock in, they clock in, and GPS points are gathered until they clock out or take a break. When they leave the fence, the phone reminds them to clock out. The FAQ calls these reminders, and a reminder is what a crew that forgets punches needs.

What it does not do, according to the public docs

The line that matters most in the help article is the one about disregarding the notification. The article says a worker can clock in and out as normal without acting on it, and neither page describes a setting that refuses a punch made outside the fence. That is what the two pages say on the point as of September 8, 2026.

Here is what the two pages leave unstated, plus one limit they do state:

• Whether a manager is told about an off-site punch. Neither page states what a manager sees on the timesheet or in a report when a clock-in happens outside the fence. That may exist elsewhere in the product; the pages on geofencing do not describe it, so ask.
• What "require location to track time" checks. The FAQ names it as a per-employee setting. The pages we read do not say whether it compares the worker's position against a geofence or only requires location services to be on, so ask that too.
• How often GPS points are gathered. The FAQ says points are gathered while clocked in and not on breaks. It does not state the interval.
• A radius under 100 meters. The article states 100 meters as both the default and the minimum, so a tighter fence for a small residential lot is not an option the article describes.

None of this is a hidden weakness. Intuit publishes what the feature does. Decide whether a reminder is what you wanted before you pay for Elite.

Questions to ask before you rely on it

1. Do you want a reminder or a block? If a worker clocks in from the truck a mile out, decide now what you want the app to do, because Intuit's pages describe a notification the worker can disregard.
2. What does the timesheet or a report show when a punch happens outside the fence? Ask Intuit's support to show you, since the geofencing help article does not say.
3. Is a 100-meter minimum radius workable for your sites? GPS.gov, read September 8, 2026, puts a phone's accuracy at about 4.9 meters under open sky and says it worsens near buildings, bridges, and trees, so the fence size and the site type both matter.
4. Are your workers assigned to every job they visit? Notifications only fire for assigned jobs, so an unassigned worker gets no reminder.
5. How will you tell the crew that GPS points are gathered while they are clocked in, and what notice will you collect? We cover the notice side in whether GPS tracking of employees is legal.
6. Does the cost of Elite, a base plus a per-user rate on top of the QuickBooks Online subscription it requires, match the reason you want geofencing?

How Clox handles the same problem

In Clox, the geofence blocks the punch. A worksite is a named location with a GPS coordinate and a radius, 200 meters by default, and the docs say to start generous and tighten later. You turn geofencing on for each employee from the Team page; it is a per-person setting, so a roaming worker can be left off. A geofenced worker who is outside every assigned worksite at clock-in has the punch blocked, with a message to get on site.

Location is read only at the moment of the punch. Clox never tracks anyone between punches: no breadcrumbs, no live map of people, no background tracking. The location question gets answered on the approval screen instead of by watching a map during the day. A second, independent check is the site WiFi network: require the phone to be on the site WiFi at clock-in, which is useful indoors and on multi-floor sites where GPS drifts. Every punch is signed and hash-chained, anyone can verify a record at getclox.com/verify, and a Proof of Presence PDF exports from Reports. That proves the record has not been altered since capture. It does not prove a GPS reading was true, because location comes from the worker's phone on any app, Clox included, and a phone's location can be faked. A geofence is a deterrent.

QuickBooks Time fits a company that already runs QuickBooks Online, which the product requires, and wants geofencing as reminders plus GPS points while clocked in.
