The Best Time Tracking Apps for Construction Crews (2026): An Honest Comparison

This page is an honest comparison of six time tracking apps for construction crews: Clox, ClockShark, busybusy, Workyard, QuickBooks Time, and Connecteam. Every price and feature comes from the vendor's own pricing page, with the date we read it, and where a page is silent we say so. Clox is our product; it gets the same treatment as the other five.

How we compared

Construction crews have four problems an office time clock doesn't. The crew moves between sites, signal drops in basements and on rural lots, hours need a job code per pour or per phase, and on Friday a bookkeeper needs a file their payroll system accepts. We checked eight things: an offline punch, geofenced sites that block an off-site punch, job costing, a kiosk, overtime math, payroll exports, the price for 6 users with base fees included, and the contract term.

Prices are monthly for 6 users on the tier named. Read dates: September 8, 2026 for Clox, Workyard, and QuickBooks Time; August 9, 2026 for ClockShark and busybusy; July 28, 2026 for Connecteam.

Clox

Clox is one plan with every feature on it. A worker clocks in, out, and on break with one tap from the iPhone or Android app, or from a phone browser with nothing installed. Punches queue when there's no signal and sync when it returns. A worker switches projects mid-shift without clocking out, so the pour and the flatwork land on two jobs.

A worksite is a named location with a GPS coordinate and a radius, 200 meters by default; the docs say start generous and tighten later. Geofencing is turned on per employee, and a geofenced worker outside every assigned worksite at clock-in has the punch blocked. In a basement where GPS drifts, a second check can require the phone to be on the site WiFi. Location comes from the worker's phone, so the geofence is a deterrent, not proof; the limits are in A Geofence Time Clock for Construction Crews.

The plan is $29 a month for the first 3 users and $6 for each user after that, so 6 users is $47; annual billing is about 20 percent off, and there is no contract. For Friday's file, QuickBooks Online takes a CSV or an optional live sync, QuickBooks Desktop takes an IIF file, and ADP RUN, ADP Workforce Now, Paychex Flex, and Gusto take a CSV import. ClockShark

ClockShark's pricing page, verified August 9, 2026, lists Standard at $40 a month plus $9 per user and Pro at $60 plus $11 per user, so 6 users is $94 or $126. Standard includes time and attendance, GPS, jobs and tasks, drag and drop scheduling, manager roles and approvals, and integrations. Pro adds paid time off, multi-department and multi-office controls, advanced job costing, and shift wrap-up and compliance forms. There's a 14-day trial.

The line that matters most is this one: "Contract term of three (3) years applies to all pricing plans." A multi-office general contractor that has settled on a tool can plan around that; a crew whose headcount changes with the season should read that line before the price. The page lists GPS on Standard without saying whether it includes a geofence that blocks a punch, and it doesn't mention a kiosk or offline punches. Our ClockShark comparison covers the rest.

busybusy

busybusy's free plan, verified August 9, 2026, covers unlimited users and includes GPS time tracking, job costing, equipment tracking, overtime, and offline mode. For a dirt and concrete outfit that means hours by job, equipment hours next to labor hours, and punches that work on a rural lot with no signal, at no cost. Pro is $9.99 per user per month billed annually plus a $40 admin license, so 6 users is $99.94; it adds GPS breadcrumbing, scheduling, a kiosk, and time off.

Our busybusy comparison recorded geofenced on-site clock-in on Pro and up, so confirm which tier stops an off-site punch. Ask which payroll file your bookkeeper gets, since the page doesn't list formats.

Workyard

Workyard's pricing page, read September 8, 2026, says "Plans start at $6 per user / month, billed annually", with monthly billing available. Starter has GPS tracking, a time clock, break and overtime compliance, payroll integrations, and field expense tracking. Pro adds scheduling, geofencing, unlimited projects, project tracking, labor cost reporting, and accounting integrations.

Per-tier prices and any base fee aren't published, so 6 times $6, or $36 a month, is a floor for Starter on annual billing. Geofencing and labor cost reporting sit on Pro, and that's the price to ask for. There's a 14-day trial with no card. Our Workyard comparison lists the questions that turn the floor into a quote.

QuickBooks Time

QuickBooks Time's pricing page, read September 8, 2026, lists Time Premium at $20 a month base plus $10 per user and Time Elite at $40 plus $12 per user. For 6 users that's $80 or $112, a "save 50 percent for 3 months" offer is shown, and a QuickBooks Online account is required. Premium includes a time kiosk; Elite adds project tracking and estimates vs actuals. There's a 30-day trial.

Geofencing needs Elite. Per Intuit's help article Use geofencing in QuickBooks Time, read September 8, 2026, "A team member can choose to clock in and out as normal and disregard the geofence notification." If payroll already runs inside QuickBooks Online and a reminder is enough, this is the native path; see our QuickBooks Time comparison. If you want an off-site punch stopped, Clox does that and exports to QuickBooks Online.

Connecteam

Connecteam's pricing, verified July 28, 2026, starts with a Small Business plan that's free for 10 users or fewer. Operations Basic is $29 a month for the first 30 users, then $0.80 per user. Basic includes real-time clock in and out with GPS, unlimited jobs, payroll integration, basic scheduling, and checklists and forms; it has one time clock and no geofence sites. Advanced is $49 for 30 users and adds up to 10 geofence sites and auto clock out; Expert is $99 and adds unlimited geofence sites, GPS breadcrumbs, and API access. Those are yearly rates with an 18 percent saving stated, and Communications and HR are separate hubs.

For 6 users, Basic is $29 (the price covers a 30-user block) and geofenced sites start at $49. Connecteam fits a deskless workforce that wants communications and HR from the time clock vendor. Basic lists payroll integration without naming formats. Our Connecteam comparison has the detail.

How to choose for a construction crew

• Basements and rural lots. Require punches that queue offline. Clox and busybusy's free plan list it; the other pages don't say, so ask.
• Per pour, per phase. The job has to be picked at the punch rather than allocated from a weekly total on Friday. Clox and busybusy's free plan include job costing; ClockShark lists jobs and tasks on Standard. Our job costing method explains what to ask for.
• The Friday file. Match the export to your bookkeeper's payroll system. Clox lists its formats; ClockShark, Connecteam, and Workyard list integrations without naming them.
• The contract and the total. ClockShark states a three-year term, Workyard's $6 rate is billed annually, and Clox is month to month. Base fees, admin licenses, and 30-user blocks change the math at 6 users; more tools are priced in our time clock cost guide.
